REUBEN N. MUÑOZ is an artist in Riverside, California. Born and raised in the Inland Empire, he moved to Long Beach after attending community college in San Jacinto. He left Cal State Long Beach in 1980, meeting and settling down with partner Paul Velen. During this time Muñoz began a career as a newspaper designer and illustrator, first for the Long Beach Press-Telegram, followed by a brief stint at The Arizona Republic, and finally for The Los Angeles Times beginning in 1993. In 2004 Muñoz underwent a quintuple heart bypass, leaving work and relocating to Riverside, CA in 2006. After a hiatus Muñoz returned to The Times, eventually retiring from there in 2012, post severe spinal difficulties. Muñoz and Velen remain in Riverside and are looking ahead to their fourth decade together as an artist and psychotherapist respectively.
